Asali
"There is a vitality, a life
force, an energy, a
quickening that is
translated through you
into action and because
there is only one of you
in all of time this
expression is unique.
And if you block it it will
never exist through any
other medium and be
lost. The world will not
have it."

-Martha Graham
Asali has been studying Oriental Dance since
2002 and has been performing since 2003. Asali's
dance style is joyful and tasteful. Her style of
dance is influenced by western dance, traditional
and non-traditional belly dance styles, modern
dance, and her martial arts background. She
uses several props such as veil, sword, and
finger cymbals. She dances regularly as a soloist
and troupe member at restaurants, festivals,
parties, haflas and stage shows. Asali
choreographs for soloists and groups and
teaches several private belly dance students in
the Gastonia and Charlotte area in addition to
structured group classes at
The Perfect Step
Dance Studio in Gastonia.

Asali studied belly dance with both
Zarifa and
Yasmine/Magic Hips of Charlotte. She continues
her studies with her own research and also
regularly attends workshops with
world-renowned performers such as:
Aziza, Rachel Brice, Bozenka, Zhaleh Fereshteh,
Sahra Saeeda, Dr. Maya, Morroco, Dalia Carella,
Paola Blanton, Suhaila Salimpour, Phoenix, Fat
Chance Belly Dance, Dondi, and Issam Houshan
to name a few.

Asali's goal is to bring her audience joy and to
express the nuances of the music through
movement. She also wishes to enrich her
students' lives in a similar way that Raks Sharqi
has enriched hers. She feels that raks is for any
person, male or female, young or old, large or
small, able-bodied or with a disability. She feels
that we all have beauty that can be physically
expressed through dance.

Outside of bellydance, Asali holds a BA in
Psychology,  a BA in English, and a Masters of
education. She has 13 years of experience
working with people who have disabilities of all
ages and is an advocate for people who wish to
better themselves. When she isn't dancing or
working in the developmental disabilities field,
she is pursuing her MLIS from UNCG and hopes
to add her profile
to this site within the next
couple of years.
